How do heat pumps work?

A heat pump changes where heat is available. Rather than relying only on converting electricity directly into heat at the point of use, it uses a refrigeration cycle to move heat between a source and a destination. Understanding that basic idea makes its operating figures easier to interpret.

Moving heat from one place to another

In heating mode, a system draws heat from a source such as outdoor air or the ground and delivers heat to a building. Some systems can reverse their operation for cooling. Input energy and delivered heat are different

This is an illustrative ratio, not a promised rating for a real installation.

A single operating-point figure does not describe a whole season. Conditions change, and the system may use energy for functions beyond the compressor. When comparing performance figures, ask which test method, temperature conditions and system boundary apply. Compare like with like before interpreting differences.

A simple example of the ratio

Suppose an illustrative system delivers 9 kWh of heat while using 3 kWh of electricity over a defined test period. Dividing output by input gives a ratio of 3 for that example. This calculation says nothing about another building, another outdoor temperature or a different operating schedule without further information.

The building is part of the discussion

Before focusing on a model number, describe the space being heated, its existing distribution system and the comfort requirements. A qualified designer can assess the heating load and the suitability of the distribution arrangement. A room count alone does not capture all of those conditions.
